David A. Gottardo is involved in all aspects of intellectual property law to include patents,
trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and unfair competition.  He has substantial experience
in the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications for large and small
clients both within the United States and internationally.  David has prepared patent
applications for complex processing machinery,
construction equipment, food dispensing
systems,
medical equipment, sporting goods and on-line games, to name a few.  He has
prepared trademark and service mark applications for beauty products, construction
services, aircraft cleaning services, as well as other goods and services.  

His legal practice includes counseling clients in patent and trademark availability and
infringement matters. He has counseled both individuals and start-up companies, as well as
established businesses regarding the planning and execution of effective strategies for
establishing and maintaining maximum intellectual property protection.

David also has litigation experience regarding both patent and trademark infringement
matters and has made numerous court appearances before both state and federal judges
located within the Circuit Court of Cook County and the Northern District of Illinois,
respectively.  In these litigation matters, David has successfully defended parties accused of
patent or trademark infringement, resulting in the dismissal or summary judgment of the
cases in favor of the defendants.

David's pre-law experience encompasses over eight years of design and project engineering
for both engineering consulting firms and government agencies.  His engineering experience
includes the design and implementation of various mechanical systems, to include
complex

eating ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, fueling and chilled water systems.

His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a Juris Doctor degree from the John
Marshall Law School of Chicago, Illinois.  While in law school, he was a publications editor for
The John Marshall Journal of Computer and Information Law and the author of a published
article about antitrust law and the Internet (16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L 125 (1997)).
David was also a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Judge Ronald Guzman of the Northern
District of Illinois, Eastern Division, where he assisted in the preparation of numerous patent
infringement decisions.  

David is admitted to practice law within the States of Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as before
both the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (including the Federal
Trial Bar) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is also a member of the
Illinois
, Chicago and Wisconsin Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law
Association, and the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago.
